Franchise Fees Explained: Royalties, Ad Fund, and More

The purchase price of a franchise is only the beginning. Between the initial franchise fee, ongoing royalties, advertising contributions, and various other charges, franchise fees can consume a significant portion of your gross revenue. Understanding each type of fee — and how they compare across brands — is critical to projecting your actual earnings.

Initial Franchise Fee (Item 5)

This is the upfront fee paid for the right to operate under the franchisor's brand. Typical franchise fees range from $20,000 to $50,000, though some premium brands charge $75,000 or more. This fee is usually non-refundable and is included in the Item 7 total investment estimate. Keep in mind that multi-unit deals often come with reduced per-unit franchise fees.

Royalty Fees (Item 6)

Royalties are the ongoing cost of being part of the franchise system, typically calculated as a percentage of gross revenue — not profit. Most franchise royalties fall between 4% and 8%, paid weekly or monthly. A seemingly small difference matters: on $800,000 in annual revenue, the difference between a 5% and 7% royalty is $16,000 per year coming directly off your bottom line.

Advertising Fund Contributions

Most franchisors require contributions to a national or regional advertising fund, typically 1% to 4% of gross revenue. This money funds brand-level marketing campaigns. Some franchisors also require additional local advertising spend on top of the fund contribution. Be sure to account for both when calculating your total marketing obligation.

Technology and Other Recurring Fees

Many modern franchise systems charge technology fees for POS systems, proprietary software, or digital platforms. These can range from $200 to $2,000+ per month. Other common fees include training fees for new employees, renewal fees at the end of your term, and transfer fees if you sell your franchise.
